Hug Me by Simona Ciraolo

Ever feel like you need a hug, a really big hug from someone? Felipe the young cactus does.

Slightly off topic, but here’s a true fact for you, cactus juice is great for sun burn. Here’s a true story for you, when I lived in Barcelona I caught the sun quite badly on my face. It hurt, a lot. I thought I would pop out and find some cacti to sooth my face and save a few euros. I stumbled across what I thought was an aloe vera plant “Hallelujah,” I thought “This will be EVEN better.” I cut off a leaf and took it home, sliced it open, scooped out the gel and massaged it into my face (thoroughly). A short time later my sunburn started to REALLY hurt, I looked in the mirror to see my face had inflamed and was much redder than it was with small white spots appearing. Alarmed, I looked at the plant again, hmm it has a dark green stripe up the leaf, I don’t think aloe vera looks like that. After a quick google search I realised I had used something called a snake plant to sooth my sunburnt face. Apparently, it’s banned from school grounds because it’s so poisonous. Moral of the story, don’t mess with nature, or perhaps do some research first.

That was pretty stupid right, but I can safely say I have never tried to hug a cactus. Unfortunately for Felipe, all he wants in life is a hug. His family aren’t the touchy-feely type, as you can imagine (think of Rogue from X-men, but in cactus form). But Felipe, not deterred by his prickly exterior sets off on own in search of that long-awaited, comforting hug.

If you know my blog well, you’ll know I’m a massive fan of everything Flying Eye Books does. Their books are always of a high production value, with gorgeous artwork and original stories. Hug me by Simona Ciraolo doesn’t disappoint. It’s a heart-warming story, with delightful illustrations, another gem from the people at Flying Eye Books.
