The Only Pupil in the School by Liu Hsukung

Balestier Press publishes the best and most original voices in contemporary Asian literature—including novels, short stories, and children’s picture books.

The book is written and illustrated by Taiwanese author Liu Hsukung and is translated from the Chinese by Wang

It is a story about a young girl, who discovers she is the only pupil in the school. All the teachers are fighting over who gets to teach her, they all want to keep their jobs. The teachers are arguing so much, they don’t notice the young girl sneak out of the classroom. We then follow her on her adventure, as she learns valuable lessons in the outside world.

The book is illustrated beautifully with soft pastels, which is unusual for a picture book. We have become used to seeing mostly digital illustrations made using graphic tablets, photoshop and illustrator. It is refreshing to see a picture book in contrast to that.
