The Bear’s Song by Benjamin Chaud

Another one of my favourite illustrators and picture book makers, Benjamin Chaud. This book is an oldie really, I’m sure you’ve all heard of it and probably already own it. But isn’t it beautiful!

I love the size of the book, the attention to detail, the style of illustration.

A seek-and-find picture book about a little bear who awakes from his hibernation early to follow a bee – because where there are bees, there is honey.

I Didn’t Do My Homework Because by Benjamin Chaud and Davide Cali

I wish the kids in my class came up with excuses as imaginative as these.

Another hilarious and whimsical picture book by Benjamin Chaud and Davide Cali.

How many excuses are there for not doing homework? Let us count the ways: Giant lizards invaded the neighbour-hood. Elves hid all the pens. And then there was that problem with carnivorous plants….The excuses go on and on, each more absurd than the next and escalating to hilarious heights.

Farewell Floppy by Benjamin Chaud

It was the perfect plan: abandon pet rabbit Floppy in the woods and take a giant leap toward adulthood. Having a bunny that moonlights as a best friend is for babies, right? It’s better to cut a pet loose, make new human friends and not be so dependent on a floppy-eared fur ball bent on chewing electrical cords, right? If saying good-bye to Floppy is required to grow up, why does life without Floppy seem so wrong?

From Benjamin Chaud, the critically acclaimed author/illustrator of The Bear’s Song and The Bear’s Sea Escape, comes this unforgettable, thought-provoking picture book about the power of unlikely friendships.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to School… By Davide Cali and Benjamin Chaud

A Funny Thing Happened on the way to School

The gifted and talented child’s version of the classic ‘my dog ate my homework’, the premise sees a boy attempting to weave a stream of excuses together in order to explain the reason of his tardiness to his unimpressed teacher. However, his imaginative excuses are a creative force to be reckoned with and his ability to draw on his knowledge of fairy tales and popular culture is remarkable.

His inventive excuses pay homage to Alice in Wonderland, The Pied Piper of Hamelin, Little Red Riding Hood & King Kong to name some. As well as these mind boggling experiences, he encounters giant ants, Big Foot, a yeti and an alien invasion.

The ending is surprising and it reminds children of the magic of stories and the lack of imagination of some grown-ups.

From Davide Cali and Benjamin Chaud, the critically acclaimed author/illustrator team behind I Didn’t Do My Homework Because . . . comes a fast-paced, actionpacked, laugh-out-loud story about finding the way to school despite the odds—and the unbelievable oddness!
